Worship Resources for March 29, 2020

GATHERING

Good morning. This is week five of Lent, and week five of our worship series on The Lord’s Prayer. This week Pastor Chris is preaching on the petition: Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Call to Worship

We’ve gathered together in the presence of God
to offer our praise and our prayers.
We come before God with confidence,
knowing that even when we can’t find the words,
God’s own Spirit is right here with us,
praying in us and for us,
giving shape to our wordless hopes and longings,
and pleading for us before the throne of grace.
So let’s come with joy to offer our worship
to God who knows and loves us all. --Romans 8:26-27, The Message

Opening Song:

CONFESSION AND ASSURANCE

Call to Confession

We are the people of God, but we are reminded daily that we still sin. We confess our failures, our anxiety, our shortcomings, knowing that the Lord Jesus intercedes for us.
In this time of heightened tension, know that God freely forgives us, through his infinite goodness and mercy. So let us draw near to God with sincerity and confidence, and pray together.

Prayer of Confession

We do not know how to pray, Sovereign God. We have doubted you in the face of affliction and ignored you when things go well for us. When things become difficult we come crying to you, asking why things are so hard, forgetting your promises. You promised to help us in our weakness, yet we live as if we can rely only on ourselves. We have not pursued your kingdom as the only treasure worth claiming. We have feared to trust your assurance and guidance. We ask your forgiveness and seek the renewal of our covenant with you and with one another. Hear now our silent prayers.

spend a few moments in silence, praying.

Amen

Assurance of Pardon

In our love for each other, we experience God's love for us. In forgiving each other, we remember how deeply God has forgiven us. We are God's children, called to be different, called to live as new people. Friends, this is the good news offered to us: through the power of the Holy Spirit working in us, we are able to be God’s people.
Thanks be to God. We are forgiven. Amen

Song of Response

HEARING THE WORD

Children's Message

Holy Scripture:

1 Peter 5:6-11

Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, so that he may exalt you in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him, because he cares for you.

Discipline yourselves, keep alert. Like a roaring lion your adversary the devil prowls around, looking for someone to devour. Resist him, steadfast in your faith, for you know that your brothers and sisters in all the world are undergoing the same kinds of suffering.

And after you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, support, strengthen, and establish you. To him be the power forever and ever. Amen.

Sermon

Song of Response

A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing;
Our helper He, amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing:
For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe;
His craft and pow'r are great, and, armed with cruel hate,
On earth is not his equal.

And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us,
We will not fear, for God hath willed His truth to triumph through us;
The Prince of Darkness grim, we tremble not for him;
His rage we can endure, for lo, his doom is sure,
One little word shall fell him.

That word above all earthly pow'rs, no thanks to them, abideth;The Spirit and the gifts are ours through Him Who with us sideth;Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also;The body they may kill: God's truth abideth still,His kingdom is forever.
